Lessons

   The Toronto Trailbladers will be offering group lessons for beginner, intermediate, and advanced adult, recreational skaters who are club members.

    Providing we generate enough interest, there'll be one course of four lessons in May for beginners at the Otter Creek outdoor rink, a course for intermediates in June on the trails, as well as an advanced course in August for those who want to learn advanced, skating techniques.

Skating Course for Beginners

Sorry, the beginner course has been cancelled for the 2008 season.



The Toronto Trailbladers will provide a series of 4 x 2-hour lessons each Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 PM on May 27th and June 3rd, 10th, and 17th at the Otter Creek outdoor rink. The cost will be $120 per person. We need a minimum of 12 skaters to make this course a go, so if you have a friend or two who also need lessons get them to sign-up as well.

Prerequisites

(1) Skating Skills: None

(2) Club Membership: You must be a member of the club to participate in club lessons. To become a member of the Toronto Trailbladers, download the PDF form from the home page. Open the form in Acrobat Reader and print it locally. Mail the completed form to the following address along with a cheque for $40.00 payable to Ernie Crawford. The form says #35.00, but you can disregard as that is an old membership fee.

Course Overview

The course will introduce you to the basics of inline skating, as well as some of the safety aspects. Stance and balance, heel stopping, pumping the brake, parallel turning around pylons, striding and gliding, and skating through an obstacle course will all be covered in a safe, controlled environment.

The purpose of this course is to teach you the skills you will need to make a successful transition to blading on trails with the club. The lessons also prepare you for the second course in the series entitled Skating Course for Intermediates.


Course Instructor

Jim Safianuk is a co-organizer of the Toronto Trailbladers inline skating fitness club and owner of the Inline Skating Center site, which publishes skating lessons, maintenance modules, and trail guides for the adult, recreational, inline skating community.

Furthermore, Jim has been an ice skater and downhill skier for 20+ years, as well as an inline skater for the past 10 years. He rolls about 800 kilometres each summer. Jim is a CSIA, ski instructor and a CSCF, racing coach. In addition, he is an NCCP, certified coach within the National Coaching Certification Program.



Skating Course for Intermediates

The Toronto Trailbladers will provide a series of 4 x 3-hour lessons each Saturday afternoon from 1:00 until 4:00 PM on June 21st and 28th, and July 12th and 19th. The cost will be $120 per person. We need a minimum of 6 skaters to make this course a go!

Prerequisites

(1) Skating Skills: Skating Course for Beginners with the club, or an equivalent course, or three years of inline skating.

(2) Club Membership: You must be a member of the club to participate in club lessons. To become a member of the Toronto Trailbladers, download the PDF form from the home page. Course Overview

Each lesson will be held on a different trail and will focus on intermediate techniques so you can take your trail skating to the next level. These lessons are geared for beginners who want to become intermediate, trail skaters. Some of the potential trail hazards, mid-radius parallel turns for speed control on smaller hills, pumping the brake for quicker stopping, as well as longer strides and glides for more effective skating and building strength in the upper leg and core muscles.

The purpose of this course is to help you become a more efficient and effective trail skater so you can handle longer distances, deal with some of the potential hazards in a safe manner, conserve energy, and learn how to build strength in the upper leg and core muscles. The lessons also prepare you for the third course in the series entitled Advanced Skating Course.

Course Overview

These lessons are geared for intermediates who want to become advanced, fitness skaters. More potential trail hazards, short-radius parallel turns for speed control on steeper hills, crossover turns for wide bends in the trail, lateral skating movements, T-stopping, and the speed skater's stride and glide for fluid, efficient movements and energy conservation over longer distances will all be covered. In addition, to enhance cardiovascular endurance, faster paced, interval skating at 3/4 speed over moderates distances, as well as sprints over short distances on flat, straight stretches will also be included in the course.

The purpose of this series is to help you become a more efficient fitness skater, improve your stamina and aerobic capacity, deal with the remaining potential hazards in a safe manner, build even more strength in the upper leg and core muscles, and impart an element of style to your skating via fluid, rhythmic movements.
