Sunday Rolls in August



    Five Sunday rolls are scheduled for the month of August. We'll be start at West Humber and finish the month in Whitby-Oshawa. In between we'll be rolling Hamilton Beach, Port Credit, and Welland-Thorold.








Sunday August 3rd

Trail: West Humber Park

Roll Time: 1:30 PM

Directions by Car:

  1. Exit Highway 401 at Islington Avenue.
  2. Go north on Islington Avenue a few kilometres to Irwin Road.
  3. Turn right on Irwin Road.
  4. Head east 500 metres to Albion Road.
  5. Turn left and follow Albion Road north for about 50 metres.
  6. Turn left into the parking lot at West Humber Park.

Directions by Public Transit:

  1. From the Islington subway station, take the Islington 37 bus north to Elmhurst Drive.
  2. Then take the Elmhurst 96 bus east to Albion Road.
  3. From here, walk north for about 300 metres to the start of the trail in West Humber Park.
  1. Or, from Royal York Station, take the Royal York 73 bus to Albion Road.
  2. Get off one stop north of Elmhurst.
  3. When you get off the bus, you will be at Summerlea Park.
  4. Cross the road to the West Humber Park parking lot.
  1. Or, from Wilson Station, take the Wilson 96 bus to Elmhurst.
  2. Walk over to the West Humber Park parking lot.



Roll: We'll roll northwest through the Humber River Valley and back. After that we will skate southeast to Weston Road and back. This part of the trail is relatively new and quite smooth. The combined distance of the two legs is 30 kilometres. Many consider this to be the best trail in Toronto.







Afterwards: Meet after the roll for food and drink at the Jolly Italian restaurant in the Crossroads Centre mall at Weston Road and Highway 401.

Sunday August 10th

New trail last year!

Trail: Hamilton Beach to Stoney Creek

Departure Time: Car pool at the Islington subway parking lot at 12:30 PM

Roll Time: 1:30 PM

Directions by Car:

  1. Take Queen Elizabeth Way west to Burlington.
  2. Follow QEW Niagara at the 403/407 junction.
  3. Continue approximately 2 km to Eastport Dr., which is just before the Skyway.
  4. Follow Eastport Dr., under the Skyway, to the lift bridge.
  5. Cross the lift bridge.
  6. A very short distance after crossing the bridge there is parking on your left.
  7. Meet at the end of the parking lot, closest to the lift bridge.



Roll: We'll roll along the beach to Stoney Creek and back. The trail is approximately 18 kilometres round trip so we'll roll two legs for a combined distance of 36 kilometres. This is a wide trail with a flat, smooth surface and low traffic volume, which makes it excellent for striding and gliding practice, interval training, and sprinting.

Sunday August 17th

Trail: Port Credit to Marie Curtis Park

Roll Time: 1:30 PM

Directions by Car:

  1. Exit the Queen Elizabeth Way west at Hurontario Street.
  2. Follow Hurontario south to Lakeshore Blvd. in Port Credit.
  3. Continue south at the light a short distance until you reach Port Street.
  4. Turn right on Port Street.
  5. Head west until you reach the end of Port Street.
  6. Turn left into the Municipal Parking lot behind the Snug Harbour restaurant.
Directions by Public Transit:
  1. Take the Go train from Union Station.
  2. West to Port Credit.
  3. Walk south to the light at Lakeshore Boulevard.
  4. Then walk further south a short distance to Port Street.
  5. Walk west until you reach the end of Port Street.
  6. Turn left into the Municipal Parking lot behind the Snug Harbour restaurant.

Roll:
We'll roll east from Port Credit to Marie Curtis Park and beyond.






Afterwards: Port Credit has several good outdoor restaurants. We can dine at Snug Harbour, which is next to the parking lot.

Sunday August 24th

Trail: Welland to Thorold

Departure Time: Car pool at the subway station at 11:30 AM

Roll Time: 1:30 PM

Directions by Car:

  1. Follow QEW towards St. Catharines.
  2. Take the Highway 406 exit just before St. Catharines.
  3. Drive on Highway 406 towards Welland.
  4. Follow Highway 406 to the very end.
  5. Turn right on E. Main St.
  6. Follow E. Main St. to Dorothy St.
  7. Turn right on Dorothy St.
  8. Drive about 200 feet and turn left on Merritt Island.
  9. Follow Merritt Island through the park to the end.
  10. There are washroom facilities here as well.



Roll: We'll roll along the Welland Canal from Welland to Thorold and back. The trail is approximately 30 kilometres round trip. This is a brand new trail with an excellent surface after the 2 kilometre mark. This trail is one leg of the Welland Canals trail system.

Sunday August 31st

Trail: Whitby to Oshawa

Departure Time: Car pool at the York Mills subway station at 12:30 PM

Roll Time: 1:30 PM

Directions by Car:

Note: Do not exit Brock Rd. in Pickering.

  1. Take the 401 east to Whitby.

  2. Take the Brock St. exit in Whitby.
  3. Drive south to the Rotary Sunrise Lake Park.
  4. Meet in the parking lot in Rotary Sunrise Lake Park, which is close to the harbour.
  5. You will see the small light house at the tip of the pier and gazebo close to the beach.



Roll: We'll roll east from Whitby along the waterfront to Lakeview Park in Oshawa then north along the Oshawa Creek into the city. The combined distance of both legs is 30+ Kilometres.




Afterwards: We'll meet at Kelseys in Whitby! From the park drive north on Brock St. until you reach the 401. On the north side of the overpass, take the first exit on your right.
